From our Delivery Gal and SoupCycler Extraordinaire Jen:

<>

While watching television last night I flipped to OPB and waited for Charlie Rose to begin. There were a couple of previews for upcoming shows, then the screen was filled with one of those station identification moments. They usually screen a landscape or some kayakers paddling down a tranquil stream in the background, and in the foreground the various Oregon channels and their locations are listed for about 15 seconds.

<>

But instead of the usual nature scene this was was obviously filmed downtown. The MAX was traveling eastbound on Yamhill Street, approaching the camera. It was raining lightly and the scene was quintessential Portland. I then noticed a bicyclist on the left side of the screen, also approaching the camera. “Yep, that’s Portland for you,” I thought. Then I noticed that the bicyclist’s coat looks a lot like my own. And she was pulling a big blue trailer behind her…

<>

It was me! I even remember seeing the photographer set up at First and Yamhill a few weeks ago, but I hopped off the bike, made a delivery, and by the time I returned he was gone.

<>

So, keep your eyes open in between shows on OPB TV. Maybe you’ll catch a glimpse of SoupCycle in action!

<>

Luckily, PDX’s got local “souper” heroes Jed Lazar and Shauna Lambert from SoupCycle, who deliver soup to your door weekly via bicycle. It’s almost as good as having your mom there.

I came out of an office building during deliveries this Wednesday to see something unexpected on my delivery trike- a grocery bag with a purse in it! I looked around and saw no one who could have put it there.

Now- I hate to admit this- but my first reaction was “Oh my gosh- a bomb!” as if someone was trying to destroy the office building I was parked in front of – or worse yet- MY TRIKE! I carefully picked up the grocery bag with purse inside and did what any good samaritan would do- brought the pursebomb to building’s receptionist- whose reaction was “Oh great- you brought me a bomb”, but she was willing to keep it there until its owner claimed it or or someone triggered it from their remote.

The next day I got an email from the receptionist telling me the purse had been claimed. The owner told the receptionist that her entire life savings- over $10,000- was in the bag. I still have no idea how it ended up on my trike or what she was doing carrying $10,000 in her purse. We have some bizarre experiences out there bicycling soup around Portland, but this ranks as one of the oddest to date.
